Tuesday
It is a good thing that Dan and I enjoy walking, because today was going to be another one full of footsteps.
We started by checking out the area on the other side of Arthur’s Seat, a small community known as Duddingston. It contained Dr Neil’s Garden, a volunteer-based green space that emphasizes the tranquility of the area. It was a beautiful place.
From the Garden we walked into the village of Duddingston. We had read that the Sheep Heid Inn had some of the best food in the region – and we were going to find out.
The Duddingston Kirk
Lunch was very good and we left more than satisfied. I guess if it is good enough for Queen Elizabeth in 2016, it would be good enough for us!
When we left the restaurant we wanted to see more of the village and took a small side street behind the main road. It was a close-knit community, as explained to us by a volunteer who was working in the community gardens hidden behind tall stone walls. She showed up some of the gardens and explained how the community worked together.
As we climbed through the fields and tree line we realized just how close we were to Arthur’s Seat. While we’d been to the top a couple of times, we’ve never explored the back side of the ancient volcanic mount.
Looking back at Duddingston – so tiny!
We had skirted around the south side of Arthur’s Seat and popped out to a great view of the city
The summer flowers really added to the beauty of the landscape
We went back to our room for a break – have a mentioned how much I enjoyed the view of the castle from our window?
And later that day we headed back to Portabello Beach. We had enjoyed our first trip there and wanted to see it again, and more of it. The weather was moody but good, and we enjoyed walking along the beach and then back on some of the nearby residential streets.
One of the few remaining bottle kilns
It was a windy day to be on the water
I want to buy a church!
